I am a dancer and having struggled through a very painful divorce I had lost interest in anything that used to be passionate for me. I had gained over 40 pds and was sinking into depression and though I knew exercise was what I needed I simply couldn’t even face climbing the stairs at work. I happened to come across an article on Nia and found a class locally. After the first class I knew it was for me. I needed the freedom to be me, I needed what Nia was offering, a chance to work my body without the stress of “Am I doing it perfectly?” and with the 3 intensity levels the class is not threatening, any shape, size or age can do it. The class has provided cardio, peace of mind, increased flexibility and I feel this class is simply good for your spirit. I have only been taking classes for just over a month and I am now taking the stairs at work, have picked up my paint brushes and my eating habits have simply become better without even trying. I walked away from instructing fitness approximately 3 years ago, I lost my love for instructing and I felt I was just going through the motions, not connecting with the participants. Then, 2 years ago, I was introduced to Patti and Mike’s outdoor Bootcamps, Pilates, and Nia classes – I was hooked. It is difficult to put into words the dynamic charm Patti brings to each class. She is a visionary healer, dancer, and teacher; her enthusiasm, passion, and energy is limitless. There is a special joy that comes from the experience of witnessing someone in the occupation that she was born to do. While she has many talents, it is my opinion that Patti’s greatest gift is her ability to create an atmosphere of absolute safety in her studio. Nia was life changing for me. I had lost interest in going to the gym, exercising, had gained weight and felt mentally low. Nia brought joy and purpose back into my life. I started exercising again, inspired me to lose 18 pounds and made me feel great! I feel more like me then I have in years.

Nia & Me
(I hope that my story will encourage others with physical limitations to get active.)

In 2004 my hairdresser/friend encouraged me to give Nia a try. What was or who was Nia? She went on to say that it was better than sex and that if I could walk then I should try Nia. She had piqued my curiosity. Was I missing out on something? I had to check it out!

On my first day, Patti the instructor could not miss (like everyone else) seeing me coming along with my walker. So I explained to her that I have MS and that walking can be hard and that I might need to sit down for a while. I was diagnosed in 1980 with Multiple Sclerosis. It became progressive in 2002 and now I can only walk for a short distance without aid. So when I started Nia I was curious to see how I would manage. Well after 3 sessions I was hooked! Sure I used my walker once in a while to sit down and rest, but my arms were doing the movements.

Fall 2005 we moved in beautiful Okanagan and no one offered the program. Fortunately in the summer of 2008, Patti the Nia instructor, was looking to move to the Okanagan. I was excited for her but never expected that she would move a couples of miles down the road from me. Then I could only hope that she would be giving sessions close by our place and she did.

Sure I don’t follow the routine with perfection and/or elegance. I still use my walker on the side to help me with my balance mostly. It does not matter to anyone that I follow the choreography to the point. What matters to me is that I can move, I can slide, I can almost fly. Can you believe it, I even workout a sweat. It gives me a renewal of energy after every session as there is so much love and positive energy in the room. It has become my special date with me to look after my body, mind & spirit and I am GRATEFUL that for one more day I can move any & all parts of my body.

As for my friend’s comment about Nia being better than sex…well you will just have to give it a try! – Anonymous
